New Feature

I added a permanent comments section on the right sidebar of this blog. Thought it would be very easy to do, so I did it and it was. You all are welcome to leave any thoughts, requests, rants, or random bits of wisdom there. I figure that I'll let it grow until it gets too large and then archive it somehow. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Newest comments are listed first, unlike most Haloscan comments setups. Comment post time is in 24-hour, military time. I learned this when I worked at the hospital. It seems much more practical to me and takes up less space since the AM/PM is not required. For those of you who are not familiar with military time, any hour that's greater than or equal to 12 is PM. To convert, just subtract 12 from any hour greater than 12 and you'll have your PM time. Examples:

0:00 = Midnight
0:15 = 12:15 AM
3:30 = 3:30 AM
6:45 = 6:45 AM
9:20 = 9:20 AM
11:59 = 11:59 AM
12:00 = Noon
12:15 = 12:15 PM
15:30 = 15-12 = 3:30 PM
18:45 = 18-12 = 6:45 PM
21:20 = 21-12 = 9:20 PM
23:59 = 23-12 = 11:59 PM

There. Now you know military time too.

Boring But Freaky

I've noticed that I have a freaky talent that can only be attributed to a higher level of psychic awareness. It's never going to make me famous or wealthy but nevertheless, it is quite an innate talent and always surprises me.

You wonder, what could this talent be? Well, I grocery shop at Whole Foods. It's a nice grocery store (except for the hippie employees) with a lot of good stuff that you can't find in regular grocery stores, like Argentine Parmesan, which I love to eat. Also, they have many bulk items available such as herbs and spices, legumes, pasta, nuts, grains, polenta, cereals, dried fruits, etc. That bulk stuff can actually be more economical than buying them at other places. For example, a bottle full of oregano will be around 80 cents but if you bought the bottle at a typical grocery store, you'd pay over $2. I use a lot of spices and haven't purchased a bottled spice from a grocery store in years.

So where's this talent? Patience. Anyway, I will go along, happily shoveling all the bulk items into plastic bags, tying them, neatly labeling them. When I get home, I have to unload everything. All the stuff in those plastic bags must be transferred to glass containers for storage. Here's the talent. Are you ready to have your mind blown? Somehow, someway, without giving it any thought whatsoever, I always manage to put the exact amount of spice or rice or whatever into the plastic bags to EXACTLY fill the different sized glass containers. I'll pour out the entire contents of each plastic bag and it will invariably fill the jar or bottle, never too much, never too little. It's bizarre.

This capacity to just magically measure stuff extends to other things too. Just now I made a cup of instant coffee. I like to add about a quarter amount of hot water and fill the rest of my coffee mug with warmed milk. So, what happens - every time? I'll pour some milk into a sauce pan to heat. When the kettle starts whistling, I'll pour a bit of hot water into the mug, stir it up to to dissolve the coffee and sugar, and then I'll pour in the warmed milk from the sauce pan. Every single drop of milk goes in, right to the rim of the mug! I don't measure the water, I don't measure the milk. It just works out perfectly.

There are so many cases of this supernatural ability of mine, but I'll stop here. I don't think you all could handle any more.

Telephoney

So, I'm sitting here looking up info online on how to fix my toilet tank. It's not filling up with water anymore. Dammit. Good thing I have three bathrooms. According to what I'm reading on the How Stuff Works site, it would appear that I have a problem with the toilet ballcock. Oh, boy. I know absolutely nothing about fixing faulty ballcocks. They have always worked perfectly for me! But, they say, "The ballcock assembly looks more complicated than it really is". This is heartening. I'll have that ballcock filling up my tank in no time...

Anyhow, the home phone rings. I look at the caller id as I always do since I will not answer calls from people that I don't know. Caller id reads:
Jehovahs Witness
2143508702

I HAVE to take this one.

Me: Hello?
Female JW: Hello, I'd like to first say that I'm not selling anything. I was calling to share some thoughts on Scripture with you.
Me: I have my own thoughts on Scripture. Thank you.
Female JW: Uh, ok.

I hang up.

I could have kicked myself. I should have told her that I was happy that she called because I could really use some help; that I have a ballcock problem and I'm not sure what to do about it. Bloody Jehovah's Witnesses.

From the email bag...

I'll Drink to That

It has been scientifically proven that if we
drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the
year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of
Escherichia coli bacteria found in feces. In other
words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop!

However, we do not run that risk when
drinking wine (or rum, whiskey, vodka, beer or other
liquors) because alcohol has to go through a
distillation process of boiling, filtering, and
fermenting.

It is better to drink wine and talk shit...
than to drink water and be full of shit

There is no need to thank me for this valuable
information. I am doing it as a public service.

Bride for the Fourth Time

A woman married three times walked into a bridal shop one day and told the sales clerk that she was looking for a wedding gown for her fourth wedding.

"Of course, madam," replied the sales clerk, "exactly what type and color dress are you looking for?" The bride to be said: "A long frilly white dress with a veil." The sales clerk hesitated a bit, then said, "Please don't take this the wrong way, but gowns of that nature are considered more appropriate for brides who are being married the first time - for those who are a bit more innocent, if you know what I mean? Perhaps ivory or sky blue would be nice?"

"Well," replied the customer, a little peeved at the clerk's directness, "I can assure you that a white gown would be quite appropriate. Believe it or not, despite all my marriages, I remain as innocent as any first-time bride.

You see, my first husband was so excited about our wedding, he died as we were checking into our hotel.

My second husband and I got into such a terrible fight in the Limo on our way to our honeymoon that we had that wedding annulled immediately and never spoke to each other again."

"What about your third husband?" asked the sales clerk.

"That one was a Democrat," said the woman, "and every night for four years, he just sat on the edge of the bed and told me how good it was going to be.

Achtung!

When EN, in his ever diplomatic and eloquent manner, stated, "Quit being so damn temperamental", I first laughed then thought that yes, I should do something about my enervated condition. So, I turned to Wagner as I always do when my spirit is in need of a jump start. The overture to his opera, Tannhäuser, at wall-vibrating, cat-rattling volume, always puts my feet solidly back on this Earth, ready to do battle with life again.

Here's the musical genius of Richard Wagner. Those violins have a way of exorcising the mind-numbing beast of complacency.

A Case of Blogger's Block

Always try to help a friend in need

Believe in yourself

Be brave...but it's ok to be afraid sometimes

Study hard

Give lots of kisses

Laugh often

Don't be overly concerned with your weight, it's just a number

Always try to see the glass half full

Meet new people, even if they look different to you

Remain calm, even when it seems hopeless

Take lots of naps

Be weird whenever you have the chance

Love your friends, no matter who they are

Don't waste food

RELAX

Take an occasional risk

Try to have a little fun each day...it's important

Work together as a team

Share a joke with friends

Fall in love with someone...

...and say "I love you" often

Express yourself creatively

Be conscious of your appearance

Always be up for surprises

Love someone with all of your heart

Share with friends

Watch your step

It will get better

There is always someone who loves you more than you know

Exercise to keep fit

Live up to your name

Hold on to good friends; they are few and far between

Indulge in the things you truly love

Cherish every Sunday

At the end of the day... PRAY

....... and close your eyes

And smile at least once a day!

Ten Commandments, Cowboy Style.
