Poor Baby

NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male, century-old tortoise in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said. The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean , then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

"It is incredible. A less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems tobe very happy with being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park , told AFP.

"After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately, it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist added. "The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it followed its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added.

"The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four years," he explained.

Nooooooooooo!

There is no logic, rhyme or reason for the devastating, humiliating and heartbreaking outcome of this Copa America final.

Brazil played well, but Argentina was as if in a trance. Something sinister was afoot in Maracaibo this afternoon - voodoo, black magic, bad mojo - you know, Brazilian stuff. Don't let that giant Jesus statue overlooking Rio fool you.

It's as if us Albiceleste fans have been assaulted. It was certainly a crime to end such a wonderful display of Argentine soccer throughout the entire tournament in such a dismal manner. Oh, how the players themselves must feel.

There was nothing to be done after this incredible disappointment. I immediately went outside and spent four hours hacking away at limbs with a machete and garden scissors, muttering to myself like some loony bird. The plants needed cutting back and I needed to abuse something. It worked out well.

I won't be embedding any video. Forget it. There's nothing good to see. Argentina was trounced 3 to 0, one of which was an autogoal! I think that one just sucked the life out of the team. Bloody hell.

Too Much For Mehico

A strong Mexican team provided the Albiceleste with a good opportunity to play some sensational soccer. Mexico gave it all they had but Argentina, of course, was superior.

Messi is simply spectacular. It's like he's doing the samba with that hip movement of his. The way he cooly lobbed the ball over the outstretched, helpless keeper and into the back corner of the net was a thing of beauty. Sanchez will relive that one in his nightmares.

Riquelme is a cool operator himself. In that penalty kick he simply forced the keeper to commit, then with a serene elegance placed the ball into the net. Or, as aptly described by another blogger - it was a Zen penalty kick.

The goalkeeper was merely another spectator as he could do nothing but watch Heinze (shown in the pic) execute his flying tiger move. Yes, I do believe Sanchez's nightmares will be filled with a mess of white and blue.

We got it all. That's why the Albiceleste are going to the finals!!! How fun it would be to be there on Sunday, surrounded by my fellow Argentines, cheering on the guys. There's nothing quite like attending an international soccer match. Oh, and while I'm there in Venezuela, I could assassinate Chavez - but not until after the match.

Let's see here. Argentina beat Mexico. Mexico beat Brazil. The property of the transitivity of inequalities states that:
if a > b and b > c; then a > c. Yep. Mathematics is on our side as well.

Argentina 3 - 0 Mexico

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! 4-0

The Albiceleste just keep getting better.

What do I know about soccer? Not much, except that I love watching Argentina play. And when they make a goal I jump up and down a lot. I'd make a good soccer groupie...

Anyhow, it was a great game, even though it was 0-0 at the half. We had some scoring chances and dominated the first half, but things weren't clicking. Then Tevez came on to start the second half. Within 90 seconds, GOOOOOOOOOL! After that, we had our way with Peru, scoring 3 more goals.

If you notice, when our guys celebrate a goal, they will often kiss each other on the cheek. It's what we do. Men kiss men, men kiss women, women kiss women, women kiss men - we all kiss. When an Argentine friend arrives or leaves, it's kisses all around for everyone - even if they've never met before. It's a very nice custom, I think.

Speaking of kissing, I do miss Crespo.

Argentina 4 - 0 Peru

So Far, So Perfect

Argentina, less 8 of their starters, finished atop Group C with a perfect 3 wins, 0 losses with tonight's solid display against a Paraguayan team that only needed a draw to stay in first place. Things were going their way at 0-0 until a double substitution in the 67th minute put Messi and Mascherano on the pitch, spoiling Paraguay's plans in the 79th minute.

And Abbondanzieri must have regained some confidence with his performance today. It could have been a different ending had he not made a couple of good saves.

As the only unbeaten team in the Copa, Argentina goes into the quarter finals with some well rested starters against Peru on Sunday.

Three down, three to go. Looks very good.

The M&M's get it done:

And now for some amusing moments in soccer :

Not So Happy Birthday To Our USA

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

Right. Excuse me while I slam down my glass of wine and laugh hysterically. Who can recite this with a straight face and their hand over their heart?

Today's verse of the day can't be a coincidence. Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.

The god of the United States of America is not the Lord. It will go the way of all the other nations throughout history who have turned away from God. They get annihilated, conquered, or fester under a soulless oppression.

As there are no nations whose God is the Lord, it stands to reason that we're on our own, as individuals. There is no longer sanctuary within the boundaries of a nation. Not a single one. The level of corruption is not yet uniform, but the coming New World Order will make it all nice and evenly horrendous.

The quaint group, including George Washington and Betsy Ross, depicted in the painting above would think they had died and gone to hell if they were to awaken from their big sleep and walk about this fallen country.

Could you imagine George Washington sitting at the White House, chatting with George Bush, asking him about what's been going on here in the last 208 years since his death? That would be one interesting conversation.

Argentina Wins, I Cry A Little

Hernán, Get Well Soon. Sigh...
Argentina advances to the quarter finals with a 4-2 win over Colombia but it was not a well-played game, with the flow too frequently interrupted by fouls. An overdue red card came out in the 90th minute against Colombia's little hot-headed, Vargas. There is no love lost between the Albiceleste and los Cafeteros.

Abbondanzieri, Argentina's goalkeeper, was not impressive.

WAAAAAAAAAAA! We lost our beautiful striker, Hernán Crespo, to an injury. He will not likely return to the Copa as he pulled a muscle in his right leg sending a mega-powerful penalty kick right down the center and into the net to score our first goal of the match, his third of the tournament.

I don't recall what I did, but cherry pits went flying everywhere when I saw him pull up, limping. It was not a pretty sight, me on the floor, gathering cherry pits, whimpering. Oh, I love watching him play. He really has heart. I'm just sick. It's not going to be the same without Crespo. I am so going to miss those lips, er, um, I mean, kicks. Maybe it's not as bad as they're saying.

Here are the goals:
